Steve talks about his transition from Real Estate sales to venturing in to the Builder Trade Program then eventually doing coaching and inspirational speaking. He also discusses his new book called change and how all proceeds go to I-Kick for Kids.

We talk about the upcoming Red Day events by Keller Williams that happens all over the country. We also discuss more about how Steve is involved with a charity that provides for and encourages kids to play soccer,. Steve also gives some useful tips about how to excel in public speaking and advice about the importance of coaching in general.

Attilio: Well hey everybody, this is Attilio! Hey, you know what I was doing? I just dropped in on a huge wave over at the ___ Sunset Beach and I’m in the tube, come out of the tube, it’s the perfect ride of my life, I’m paddling back out to get into the next lineup. This lady comes up on the side of me, she taps me on the shoulder, starts asking me a bunch of tax and legal questions and I said those are great questions! I highly recommend you seek the appropriate licensed professional. And then I said, but Mom, what other questions do you have? So, if you hear anything on the show that sounds like legal advice, Adrienne, what should they do with that, how should they, what should they do with that? If it sounds like legal advice?

Attilio: Oh, really? And what if I want to just call them and get some other—

Adrienne: Okay, so—

Attilio: Speaking of relaxing.

Adrienne: Yes, I have some, some quotes. This is actually from a book by Steve Rider called Change. And uh, Steve’s going to be joining us on the show here in a few, in a few moments.

Attilio: He’s our special guest. In, in-studio guest.

Adrienne: Okay, so this first one is on optimism: “Optimism is the one quality more associated with success and happiness than any other.”

Attilio: I have lots of optimism. This really optimistic person came up to me and I said, “Look, I’m really pissed off with you.” Just kidding. I didn’t do that.

Adrienne: Okay, and then the next one is on change. (laughing)

Attilio: I’ll have one for that one too!

Adrienne: Okay, we’ll see. There’s going to be silence, like crickets chirping.

Attilio: Hey, you know, my humor is funny to me and that’s all that matters!

Adrienne: You’re very optimistic.

Attilio: I’m like an audience of one.

Adrienne: “One reason people resist change is because they focus on what they have to give up instead of what they have to gain.”

Attilio: You know I had a science teacher, he used to always play with the loose change in his pocket. It’s annoying! That’s why I couldn’t’ get Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, he was always playing with his change in his pocket.

Adrienne: (sighs) Okay and the last one is about crazy.

Attilio: Okay.

Adrienne: (laughing) I’m interested to hear what you have to talk about, to say about this one. “The definition of crazy is doing the same thing and expecting change.”

Attilio: Doing the same thing.

Adrienne: Yes.

Attilio: You know I always have the creamy kale smoothie at the, down uh, every morning.

Adrienne: Yes.

Attilio: And I, they’re like, you’re crazy! You come in here, you get the same thing! They, they already, they know my order already. They know how to spell my name I just, I just—

Adrienne: You have them trained, they see you and they’re, they, they do the order.

Attilio: So, I ordered a side bowl the other day and they, they—

Adrienne: It threw them off!

Attilio: They called the cops on me.

Adrienne: Like what is happening here?

Attilio: Yeah. Variety. No, you know what? It, Tony Robbins talks about this, it’s called human need. Hey! I have a little pearl of wisdom to take away. Segue into another pearl of wisdom. Tony Robbins talks about understanding what people’s needs are. And he said this, he’s been, do you know the guy’s worth $400 million?

Adrienne: I thought he was worth more than that.

Attilio: I don’t’ know. He owns multiple businesses, been doing this for over 30+ years, spoken in 80 different countries to millions of people. And this is what he found: regardless of language, culture, religion, anything else, people have the six, same six human needs. And so, one of those that we were talking about as far as change is that people have a high, people like me, I have a, I need for what, variety or, or—

Adrienne: Certainty.

Attilio: Certainty.

Adrienne: I am the variety, you’re the certainty.

Attilio: Yeah!

Adrienne: I will order something different every time just to try something new.

Attilio: I’ll be that 90-year-old, old Italian man that goes into the restaurant and I just sit down and they just bring me the food, don’t bring me the menu anymore. I’ll eat the same thing over and over, I don’t care. And uh, anyways, so, when you understand what your needs are, and more importantly when you understand the needs of the people around you, Tony says, that you become more compassionate and understanding and then when you see people acting all crazy and nutty, it’s there, the desire to meet their needs.

Adrienne: Well, what he also says is by understanding those needs, you can solve all of their issues, just by understanding what are those, those top priorities for them.

Attilio: Exactly. So, there’s five other needs. Stay with our show, maybe we’ll cover them.

Adrienne: Yes! Okay, so, so speaking of coaching and self-discovery, we’ve got Isaac on the line. He’s going to talk about an event that’s coming up at the end of the month that our listeners need to hear about!

Attilio: So, we heard you guys are doing a Mastermind here in Hawaii. You guys are going to be, I told Andy this and he confirmed it, that you guys are meeting underneath an extinct volcano and that the one of the key speaker is going to be Dr. Evil.

Attilio: Yeah, you know and I want to talk about that quote that you had from Steve about crazy. Because people, this is what Zig Ziegler says, he says people are eager to make changes in their lives, but they’re unwilling to change themselves. So if you don’t want to be crazy doing the same thing year after year, you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, I highly recommend, we’ve been around Isaac and the, and the, and the, and the venues and the things that he brings and coming from contribution and I will tell you, and we’re speaking from first hand, that if you get around guys like Isaac and Andy, and go to this event, that they’ll have the answers to help you  make a change in 2017.

Adrienne: But it’s still up to you, you have to execute. Right, you can’t keep—

Isaac: Absolutely!

Adrienne: You have to be educated but you’ve got to, you’ve got to actually do.

Attilio: So, I’m going to teach you guys some Hawaiian. “Okole” is the Hawaiian word for “butt.” By the way, do you know that people who use the word “butt” a lot have big ones?

Adrienne: I’ve never heard that before.

Isaac: (laughing) Okay.

Adrienne: I think that’s an Attilio-ism.

Attilio: I’m going to work out today. Butt! I didn’t get up in time. Okay. So, anyway, okole, so this is what you have to do, you have to get your okole in front of that computer and go RSVP and come up with the money and get in your car and be there!

Isaac: Absolute because every good decision has uh, when you invest in yourself, when you invest in your growth, your business growth, your personal growth, your relational growth, that’s when your life really starts to change. We’re going to have some stories of some top producing people in a couple of different industries who’ve doubled and tripled their business and all the while maintaining balance for their relationships and their health. Doing it without working nights, without working weekends and really increasing their profits and the growth of their business while having that true quality life that everybody wants.

Attilio: You know I’ve heard other people come in through and they, and, and, I’ve been a part of organizations that I’ve spent the money, I think Benjamin Franklin says it best, is that when you empty your pockets and put it into investing in yourself, the ROI is unlimited. Unlimited, so you know, some people might be hearing this message right now, $197, where am I going to, where am I going to come up with that? You know, if your friends were doing some kind of reunion in Vegas, you come up with the money to be there! And that costs a whole lot more money than $197! So just short of robbing a bank, there’s, I don’t know, how would that look like if you went into a bank? I need to get to this Mastermind!  I need $197 or else I’m blowing the bank up. No, don’t do that! Don’t do that! But just short of robbing a bank, figure it out. Borrow! Go work!

Adrienne: Make it happen.

Attilio: Go to your neighbors and say I’m going to cut your grass today. Pay me if you want, but I’m going to cut your grass today. And, ten neighbors, I bet you do that with ten neighbors, you come up with $200.

Jody: Hi there! Yup, I’m here!

Attilio: What do you have for us today?

Jody: Okay, so I always like to share uh, you know, things that have recently happened because it just happened which means it could happen again. Um, so one of our, our, in-escrow clients uh, who’s been working really hard to put himself in a position to be able to you know, obtain home ownership in Hawaii, he uh, recently had a couple non-sufficient funds negative in his bank statements, so NSF.

Adrienne: Uh-oh!

Attilio: I had a couple of those. Being honest here!

Jody: (laughing) So, um, and, and the tie-in there is you know, he, he genuinely didn’t think that it would reflect on the loan because he has overdraft protection. So, you know, he was like, you know, I’ve, I knew it was going to go negative, but I have overdraft protection. The reason I have overdraft protection is obviously to protect me so, why, what’s the big deal?

Attilio: Yes.

Jody: Um, and I totally understand that thought process, but what I want to share and I, I, you know, want everyone to know this is that underwriters don’t like non-sufficient funds in your bank account.

Attilio: Yeah, that means, you know, it’s an indication that uh, you chew your nails.

Jody: Even if you did it strategically because of your overdraft protection and you knew you had your backup and you knew you were about to move money from a different checking account into that checking account and etc. etc., it negatively, it looks bad upon your overall loan approval and so, in many cases, uh, such as USCA and/or the V.A. loans, um, sometimes we’re able to do what’s, what’s called a manual underwrite which means the, the automated engine didn’t say, yes you’re approved! But the automated engine said, uh, it kind of could go either way, so I want an underwriter to let us know, you know? So, in, in this gentleman’s uh, situation, he was, he’s an uh, refer, which means it’s a manual underwrite and um, so he’s a V.A. buyer and you know, this non-sufficient funds really uh, could have turned it into a no.

Attilio: Were there a lot of them?

Jody: So, two.

Attilio: Two!

Adrienne: So, so two of these has cost him the ability to purchase a home?

Jody: Yes.

Attilio: So, so—

Jody: Now we were, we were able to circumvent around it, however, that will not always be the case. So, the—

Attilio: How far back did they look for these NSF’s? Because I know you’re getting it from the bank statements, correct?

Jody: Correct. Yeah, 60 days.

Attilio: Yeah, because it’s not reported to credit.

Adrienne: 60? Okay, so he’s been delayed by at least two months.

Jody: Well so yeah, we go, so it’s in his particular example, or scenario, because of some other what we call compensating factors, we were able to, you know, get our underwriter a bouquet of flowers and some chocolates and you know, she made it happen. But! My, my point is, it very well could have been a denial because he was expecting to get his keys in 25 days and it could have been yes, a 60-day delay.

Attilio: You know, uh, a lot of times people will start taking a look at um, at buying a home and they just, boom, they go out on the weekends, start looking at homes. Here’s another example, why we tell them, you’ve got to sit down with the Mortgage Genius or a lender, find out what’s going on as far as your qualifications and then, you know, like you said, maybe, and then letting, letting them know that if you’re 90 days out from buying a home, that’s a perfect time to meet with you because then you’re going to give them advice on how to keep everything squeaky clean until then, correct?

Jody: Absolutely! Because another thing is that, and maybe I should save this for next week’s tip, but you know, people often come see me when they think they’re ready and they’re like oh, yeah, I just closed all my credit cards. That’s like, aahhh! Yeah.

Attilio: So, don’t give, don’t give Jody news where her response is aahhh! You shouldn’t have done that!

Adrienne: Just give her a call now! That’s what you’ve got to do. Sit down with her, she’ll help you.

Jody: It’s never too early, ever!

Attilio: So again, I’m going to play a short clip from a conversation of a person calling in to Jody. “Hi, Jody, yeah we uh, thank you for all that advice. By the way, we just closed three of our credit cards and we just uh, we just bought a new truck this weekend!” “Aaahhh!”

All: (laughing)

Attilio: Steve! Welcome.

Steve: Thank you, thank you guys! Really, really happy to be here. Thank you very much.

Attilio: Yeah and then uh, what’s that, later on we’re going surfing!

Steve: Yee-haw!

All: (laughing)

Attilio: So, let’s uh, local style, business uh, especially here in Hawaii, it’s all about, ah, you know, it’s probably true world-wide, it’s about relationships and getting to know the person so, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where did you, where did you grow up?

Steve: I actually grew up in Texas, and moved to Arizona when I was thirteen years old.

Adrienne: And, and how long have you been in the real estate industry?

Steve: Fortunately, I’ve been in the industry longer than most people are old, so I’ve been in the business for 41 years!

Attilio: 41 years!

Adrienne: And then how, like how did you get started in the industry?

Steve: I’m actually a protégé of my father, my father was in the business and I saw he was doing very well and I t seemed like a pretty uh, good profession. I got a scholarship to go to college and once I started selling real estate, I said college is not for me.

Adrienne: So how old were you when you first started selling real estate?

Steve: I was eighteen-years-old!

Attilio: Oh, wow!

Adrienne: Oh, you got started young!

Attilio: So, eighteen-years-old, and, and is this in Arizona, or?

Steve: Yes, sir.

Attilio: Oh, wow! And has it all, and you’re in the Scottsdale area, right?

Steve: Yes, I am and you know the interesting thing, I got into the business and within the first three months I made about $70,000 and said you know, I really think this is a great profession and it’s a lot easier than going to college.

Attilio: You know, that’s an interesting thing that you bring up because even today, I mean that was a while ago but even today, people are so caught up in this pre-determined thing that you’ve got to go to college, get a degree, go get a job, and then you made it, and we don’t necessarily have to go to college, uh, my big thing is if, you know, if you’re  my doctor, I have, I would prefer that you had gone to medical school, but uh—

Adrienne: (laughing) I would think that that would be a requirement.

Attilio: Yeah, it is.

Steve: But it’s still a practice guys, don’t forget, it’s a practice.

Attilio: But at the end of the day, if somebody’s meeting my needs in whatever their business they have and providing me a high level of service, I really don’t’ care what, you know, I don’t ask for their transcripts and take a look at their GPA and all of that good stuff, I just, you know.

Steve: At the end of the day I always think it’s about finding your passion and I was very fortunate early on to find my passion and that was helping other people.

Adrienne: Now you started off with you know, in the, in the sales side and then throughout your career you’ve moved more into the, the coaching.

Steve: Yes, actually I started with the Builder Trade-In program about 40 years ago, working with builders across uh, all of the Phoenix metroplex and found that it was just an absolutely fascinating uh, opportunity to work with someone who wanted to buy a new home but had a problem, they had a home that they needed to sell. So, I’ve been specializing in that for quite some time and about four years ago, I decided to uh, do some inspirational speaking, start coaching some young adults and really giving back to my industry.

Attilio: Yeah. So, you took, you saw a need, it’s like that robot, iRobot boy, or the robots movie. “See a need, fill a need.”

Steve: Absolutely.

Attilio: And it was with your builder program and then, so that was the beginning of your real estate career?

Steve: Absolutely yeah, I’ve been doing it for a very long time.

Attilio: Oh, wow!

Adrienne: So, with the uh, so, with the giving back and the coaching, you also have a program with the young adults, the Quantum Leap.

Steve: Absolutely. That was uh, brought about by Gary Keller and Quantum Leap for young adults is all about teaching children how to, well not children, young adults anywhere from 18-25, about how to make good choices in life because like we said in the book, Change, uh, things are always changing. If they’re not changing, you’re dead!

Attilio: Yes!

Adrienne: (laughing)

Attilio: Yes, if it’s all dark and, and nothing’s moving or changing, you’re dead! You know, I was in church the other day, and Father uh, the, our priest said, uh, death is an indication that you need to slow down.

Adrienne: (laughing)

Attilio: Okay, because he’s an older gentleman and the homily that he gave was that uh, you know, unfortunately I keep running into all my close friends and relatives, but it’s always at funerals, I’m at that time in my life and he was just saying that we need to take time to go connect with our friends and relatives other than at funerals.

Steve: Absolutely and you know with young adults, uh, they come into the world and if they’re in a dependent relationship with their parents helping them and then when they turn about sixteen or seventeen they get independent. So, once they’re independent, that’s when they need a little guidance on just how to make good choices.

Adrienne: So, with, so with the Quantum Leap, it really helps them to have that guidance from a, a non-parent kind of figure?

Steve: Absolutely. When I talk, funny thing, when I taught this in Portugal, only about 20% of the people understood English but I got a standing ovation because I’m very uh, articulate and I like to give uh, metaphors and at the end of the day, I got a standing ovation and I just couldn’t have been happier.

Attilio: I think, I, I, that’s one of the things that we talked about the other day with our team is that when you teach something, you’re actually learning something. It’s a form of learning, is teaching something, right?

Steve: Absolutely, the teacher becomes the student and if you ever, guys out there in the audience, if you ever want to really master something, get into teaching it.

Attilio: Yeah uh, nothing like when you have to give a presentation to start getting prepared for it, right, because you don’t want to look like an idiot when you get in front of the group and uh, uh, I, I think a lot of times that’s human nature, right, we procrastinate and put things off and we don’t do the grind that’s necessary for the preparation to, to provide a masterful presentation. So, Quantum Leap uh, so you’re teaching that, are you teaching that on a regular basis back home in Scottsdale?

Steve: Yes, I teach it about three times in Scottsdale, I also teach it overseas and it’s really the basis of our foundation on the stuff that we like to teach because just like change, it’s all about choices, it’s all about making good choices and that’s not the world’s easiest thing to do, so it’s kind of learning the pattern of thought.

Adrienne: So, with uh, speaking of change, you’ve come up with this wonderful book. What’s the story behind it, like how did you decide that you wanted to put this together and, and put it out?

Steve: Well it actually came by default. I was a public speaker, or I was the keynote speaker in South Africa and uh, right before I went on the trip, they told me all of a sudden I wasn’t the keynote speaker. So, that really kind of uh, put a little bug in my crawl if you will, so I decided to write a book called Change which has all the same basic principles of Quantum Leap and the one thing, once I was able to write that, nobody could take it from me and nobody could uh, really tell me what I needed to do.

Adrienne: Now, with this book um, I know that you donate all of the proceeds to uh, a charity.

Steve: Absolutely, 100% of the proceeds go to I Kick for Kids, and that’s a program where I donate soccer balls all over the world so we can get our kids uh, into exercise, get them laughing, let them have fun, and you know the interesting thing is, we have a Red Day that we do every year at Keller Williams and last year I decided to just give a local school a hundred soccer balls and this was uh, a school that was pretty well to-do in a good school district, and lo-and-behold, once I donated the soccer balls, I found out they did not have one soccer ball.

Attilio: Oh, wow! So, you saw a need and filled it.

Steve: You bet! A lot of times we take things for granted but uh, you know, if you dig in and you do some research, everybody needs a little bit of help on something.

Attilio: Yeah, people don’t realize, there are kids out there, they’re usually like uh, you know, like a hollowed-out goat’s head for a soccer ball because that’s all they’ve got! So, speaking of Red Day—

Adrienne: Yeah, so—

Attilio: We have one coming up!

Adrienne: Yeah, so, so for our listeners, uh, Red Day is something that Keller Williams does as a company. Uh, so this year it’s May 11th, it’s usually what, the second, I think the second Thursday, um—

Attilio: It’s always in May.

Adrienne: Yeah, to, to celebrate Mo Anderson’s birthday. Now she was always very much into giving back in the community.

Attilio: Coming from contributions.

Adrienne: And coming from contributions. So, that, that’s what Steve is referencing.

Steve: You know, last year I think uh, worldwide with Keller Williams, in one day, we gave back to all of the communities and they said it was over 100 years of service that we gave back in one day.

Attilio: In one day.

Adrienne: It’s amazing, what we can do, when we just all come together.

Steve: Absolutely.

Attilio: So, Red Day, red is actually, it’s also a color but it’s also an acronym, and what does that stand for, Adrienne?

Adrienne: Oh, it stands for Renew, Energize, and Donate.

Attilio: Alright and uh, what are we doing for our Red Day this year?

Adrienne: We’re doing a beach cleanup! Over at Sand Islands Access Road. We’re partnering with uh, 808 Cleanups, they’re a local non-profit here that helps to keep our, our beaches clean. So, we asked them, what it’s the most, you know, what are the most-needed areas and we were going to get our office out there.

Attilio: Sand Island Beach Park, yeah.

Adrienne: So, we’re going to get our office out there and get it clean!

Attilio: So, I want to give a big shout out if you’re wanting, if you’re wanting to put together and give back, talk about something that connects everybody on this planet, it’s the ocean!  And all that stuff that goes into the ocean is ending up in the, well I know this for a fact, I saw a documentary and the Pacific Ocean is about the size of Texas, and it’s all those plastic grocery bags you guys keep using! And uh, and then those soda pop, you know, the things that your soda cans go in, those ring holders, but anyway, so cleaning the beaches is very important. If you’re not sure how to do that, and you don’t want to put all that organization upon yourself, go to 808 Cleanup, uh, they’re a non-profit organization. They take care for it, organize it for you from A-Z.

Adrienne: Well they also have a calendar too, of different cleanups that you can join, so you can always look and see what’s going on and just join them! And go participate or join us! Come join us on May 11th for our, our Red Day. We’d love to have you.

Attilio: If you’re in the area on Sand Islands, you see our directional signs, it says Red Day Keller Williams, just follow the signs and uh, come, come, come over there and help us clean up that beach. Let’s give back!

Adrienne: Okay, so now back, back to Steve, sorry for that segue, we get excited about Red Day and about, about giving back.

Steve: I get excited, too! It’s such a wonderful occasion.

Adrienne: So, so how did you come up with the um, the non-profit for the soccer balls and, and, how did that all come about?

Attilio: And why soccer balls?

Steve: Well, I started with I Kick for Kids uh, I met a uh, a really great gentleman in Portugal, uh when I went to Portugal I had two main goals in mind. One was to surf Nazaré and the second was to meet Renaldo because my son’s a soccer player and so I let everybody know that I was here to surf Nazaré which I got to do, and second of all I was going to come back this summer and bring my son, Alexander, and he was going to play soccer with Renaldo and we’re going to get to do that this year.

Adrienne: Who is Renaldo?

Attilio: Oh, boy.

Steve:  Renaldo was probably one of the bets soccer players in the world! He’s probably most famous for last year when he took himself as the captain once he got injured and uh, if you, if you’ll notice on the front of my book called Change, it has a butterfly and uh, they weren’t butterflies, they were moths, but that’s a very, very famous photo that you’ll see of Renaldo sitting there on the ground, crying, pulling himself out as a moth landed on his nose.

Attilio: Oh, so it’s all about change. Yeah, Renaldo and Messi, those are the two probably most world-renowned soccer players. My uh, 9-year-old actually has a Renaldo and a Messi uniform that he wears to practice. And stuff so yeah, he was a soccer, I think soccer is just, it’s just one of those things that anywhere in the world, no matter where you go, they, people get it, right?

Steve: Absolutely. I, I’ll never forget when I was in Cancun, I wanted to give some soccer balls away and the local cab driver said, “You know, Steve, if we don’t’ give those away here in Cancun, that would be best if we could go up to a little village where they’re a little bit more needy,” so I wanted to buy 50 soccer balls, they only had 47 at the local uh, at the local shop, so I bought all 47, we went up to the village, and I’ll never forget the  look on the kids’’ faces when we stopped in front of a church and we just gave them a whistle and said, “Free soccer balls!” And the kids came running from everywhere, it was absolutely amazing and so heart-warming.

Attilio: And you know, probably, these, and, and, months and years down the road they’ll still have them soccer balls, because I’ve seen on the TV where that soccer ball looks like its 150 years old and they’re still using it, I mean it’s like the, the print, you can’t even recognize it as a soccer ball and they still use it. Here in America, “Oh, it’s got a little scratch on it, we throw it away!” You know what? Think about those kids in the, over there and then uh, you know, help them get a soccer ball. You know what, they should just donate to your program!

Steve: Absolutely, I Kick for Kids.

Attilio: Okay, I Kick for Kids? Is that it? Dot com?

Steve: Absolutely.

Attilio: Okay.

Adrienne: And then you also have another, another website on here too with how that they can order the book.

Adrienne: Now you also are up for hire as well, for speaking engagements.

Attilio: Speaking engagements.

Steve: Yes, I am. I teach a couple things, The One Thing is uh, new productivity book that was written by Gary Keller and there was just an article on Ink magazine saying out of uh, if you want to become a billionaire, there’s 32 books to read and under productivity, The One Thing was the only book that they said you needed to look.

Adrienne: I saw that article and then I, I shared it with our team and I said, “Happy reading!” (laughing)

Steve: Absolutely.

Attilio: Yeah, great minds think alike. Alright it was just the other day I was, uh, passing by our operations manager Kimalie, she was sitting at the front desk, she was talking with Rene—

Adrienne: Who’s our virtual assistant.

Attilio: Virtual assistant manager and they were joking about something and this is what I heard when I was passing. “Now, Rene, you know there’s no such thing as multitasking!”

Steve: It’s a lie!

Attilio: It’s a lie! And I totally knew where that came from. Us reading as a team, the book called The One Thing.

Adrienne: And then he said, you know it was so great to, you know, to hear our team members repeating what we’ve been teaching them. Because we know that you, they’ve internalized it and they, they believe.

Steve: Absolutely and the other thing is not everything matters the same, so if you want to go to a really good class and get 30% of your day back, The One Thing is excellent. I also teach John Maxwell and Maxwell teaches all of the world and he uh, is most famous for the 21 Laws of Leadership.

Attilio: Yeah, we’re actually, we’re reading that.

Adrienne: That’s another book we’re reading.

Attilio: We’re reading that with a little leadership group that we have and so every Monday at 11 we go over each chapter and uh, so you know, think, visuals, that’s how people remember things. Visuals and humor, so you’re kind of like a Swiss army knife of speakers. You have all these multiple topics that you can talk on, so uh, I you know, if I’m, if I’m a business person out there, here’s the number one reason why I like having outside credible awesome speakers like you coming in, you know, you said something, I don’t know if you said it during the break or on the air, but you said you got a standing ovation?

Steve: Yes, sir.

Attilio: In Portugal?

Steve: Yes, sir.

Attilio: And, and they, 20% of the people didn’t, were—

Adrienne: Only 20% understood.

Attilio: Let’s drill that down because this is important for people that either do speaking or hire speakers. What were they telling you, what was the feedback they were giving you by standing up and clapping?

Steve: Well the first time I did the class, it was in front of 105 people and the second time was in 374 people. And not only did I get two standing ovations, but every single person wanted an autograph and they also wanted a picture with me. So, you know, when you, when you do that you know for sure that they’re not hearing every single thing that you’re saying. You know that your message is heartfelt and they get it from your feeling and from the way you’re speaking.

Adrienne: But is it the tonality is what, like 30, 36% right and words are only 7.

Steve: Absolutely, just like watching a video, its 97% retention versus reading or, or speaking.

Attilio: You know, you’re a public speaker, you’ve been doing this a lot. Somebody wants, you know, so give us, top three tips that you would give to somebody that’s, that’s in a situation where they have to give ae public speech.

Steve: First of all, just come from your heart. You absolutely don’t have to worry about if it comes off right, if you’re coming from your heart and you’re passionate, then they’ll feel the message no matter what. The second thing I would do is say make sure that you, uh, read up on your material, make sure you internalize it. They say for every one hour speech you should do 10 hours’ worth of practicing. And the third thing is have fun. Absolutely and in anything in life you need to have fun because at the end of the day, it’s all about passing a message and if they’re ready to receive it, they will. If they’re not, they won’t.

Attilio: Alright so as uh, Tony Robbins says, write this down! Number one: be authentic. So, let’s right that word authentic down. Number two: prepare! Write that word down, prepare. And then the last one is fun!

Adrienne: You’ve got to have fun!

Steve: YEE-HAW! Just like today at the North Shore!

Attilio: And this is what we know, if you do all of those three things, it’s going to be funner!

Adrienne: (laughing)

Attilio: Sure, is funner!

Adrienne: You’ve got to let, you’ve got to let that Steve in on that funner, the funner joke. What is the origin of the funner?

Attilio: I don’t know it’s just like, you know, if it’s like fun, it’s like alright, but if it’s funner, it’s like really super fun and we’re like, and we know that’s like a total made-up word, it’s not grammatical correct, but we’re like, you know what, that should be like uh, like a website. Funner.com!

Adrienne: I think that the, that it must exist. We looked it up, we looked it up.

Steve: I’m having funner on uh, the radio today and I just really appreciate, I know that you guys are very, very busy and I appreciate you bringing me on the show today!

Attilio: And he’s funner! He can surf and he’s living and enjoying life. You know what, Steve, what I like about you is you, you’ve been doing this for a long time, you’ve achieved financial success, but I think, I think they talk about it, you get to the point where you start getting into the contribution mode of your life, and it sounds like that’s a lot of what you’re doing at this point, especially by coaching, that, that’s a great indication of contribution.

Steve: Absolutely. And you know, it’s interesting when you talk about coaching, a lot of parents don’t feel they really need a coach, but how, but if you look at their children, they always need a coach. The first thing you’ll do for your child, fi he’s not doing well in school is you’ll get him a tutor, which is a coach! And then they pick up a sport, you get them a coach! And maybe they want to do music or something like that, and you get them a coach! My son has four coaches! And so, you look at that and you say, why do parents, why do adults not have coaches? I think it has to do with either a little bit of lack of self-confidence or the fact that they think they don’t want anyone to hold them accountable, they look at the word accountable as a bad word.

Adrienne: Or maybe they just don’t’ know any better.

Steve: Yeah, absolutely that could be it because here’s the deal, when you start coaching, you’re going to learn just as much or more than the student that you’re coaching. So, in anything guys, if I could recommend anyone of you out there in audience, to really want to improve yourself, and do uh, better, try and coach someone in anything. Anything that you’re good at, you’re going to be better than the student. And you’re going to learn just as much as they are.

Adrienne: So, by becoming a coach for someone and giving back through contributions it’s going to help you to hone in on your, your abilities.

Steve: Absolutely and you’ll be able to, live a life of no regrets and at the end of the day, I don’t want to go to that grave, when I do quit changing, and know that I’ve got a bunch of regrets, so I love giving back to not only the realtors in the world, but to the young adults and just making a change in their lives.

Attilio: Alright so we’re talking, you, you’ve helped with our listeners in determining that hey, you know we don’t know what we don’t know, I think that’s part of the law of the process uh, with John Maxwell, and then we know what we need to know and then continuing that process, so everybody should get a coach. If there’s some area of your life that you’re lacking in, go get a coach! Let’s talk about, what kind of questions should we be asking a coach to see if, to validate whether they should be coaching us in that particular area?

Steve: Well, there’s’ a common misunderstanding that if you’re trying to hire a coach, that coach has to be better than you, they have to do more production than you, uh, when really at the end of the day, a coach is a sounding board. So, if you’re going to have, find a coach, the first thing you want to is make sure they’re since, make sure they have preparation just like we talked about earlier. And then most importantly, let them hold you accountable. Accountability is nothing more than uh, setting a goal and moving towards that goal and energy will take you towards that goal the minute you set it.

Attilio: Yeah, I—

Adrienne: Yeah I think having the accountability, that extra person, like, that I think that makes all the difference. I think that’s, that’s, that’s the determining factor of whether you’re going to be successful or not.

Steve: And accountability actually comes through you, it’s not the person that’s holding you accountable. It’s the practice of accountability that will actually form the habit within you and once you form the habit, that habit will become a discipline.

Attilio: I think, I think what’s important about coaching is it provides external feedback. It’s hard, you cannot give yourself external feedback because you can’t step out of yourself and see how you’re coming across or, or how you’re talking or whatever it is that you’re being coached in and that accountability. You know, I know what, accountability is that drunk monkey, right? That everybody listens to. Well, you know, I’m not going to go work out today, because I’ll just work out twice tomorrow. Next thing you know, you’re 60 years old, overweight, and you had that same conversation for the last 30 years. So, anyway.

Steve: Get a coach!

Attilio: Is that our tip for today?

Adrienne: That is, I think that’s our tip for today. Tomorrow—

Steve: And every day.

Adrienne: And every day.

Attilio: Stop the coaching when you’ve got the headstone over you.

Adrienne: And you’ve got the accountability. So, one of the ways that we end uh, we end our meeting, every Tuesday, we say 100% accountable, 0 excuses. And then we do this little clap and our whole team, we all say it together.

Steve: That’s great. You know, I, in the morning when I wake up, I do an affirmation, I say, “I will l do it!” And I don’t specifically say what it is that I’ll do, I just know I will do it! Whatever I need to do, I will do and at the end of the night, I say it one more time, 50 times, I will do it. And that really will make a change in your life.

Attilio: You know, my kids, they have always had a hard time getting up and then, what I, I use this special technique, so I go in their room and uh, um, I turn the lights on and I go “Aaahhhh!”

All: (laughing)

Attilio: And then ever since I did that, they just get up on their own with their alarm clock. And it worked like a charm, I, you know, it’s my number one coaching technique for kids that like to sleep in.

Adrienne: I thought you were going to say like you squirted them with a water gun.

Attilio: No, that would be phase two, but we never got to that point because they uh, scaring the bejeesus out of them that first time took care of it.

Adrienne: So, I think that we’re going to have to uh, bring on our, our agents now. To talk about their open houses, because we’re coming to the end of the show.

Attilio: Alright, who’s first up? Michael?

Abby: With everybody. Okay, so if you’re thinking of buying a home, you know before you even start to physically look at homes, you know, get pre-approved. Talk to a lender, we have uh, uh, a lender partner that we work with you know, really well, they’re very good, communication, service, um, they’re top-notch and you know, at least in this case, you know, you’ll save a lot of money, time and heartbreak and the second tip is that you know, if you’re looking for a realtor for that buyer agent who has the whole package, who’s uh, you know, funner—

All: (laughing)
