Who is Scott McPhail?
Scott McPhail is the owner of Orangtheory Fitness in Kapolei. A graduate of Ithica College where he holds a Bachelor of Science, degree in Business Management. Here is a history of Scott’s long line and very impressive entrepreneurial experience. Scott has served as Vice President of Operations of Starbucks Coffee Hawaii. In 1996, Scott formed Coffee Partners Hawaii in Honolulu with his brother Dean McPhail and friend Greg Meier. After three years of rapid Starbucks Coffee growth, the three partners became the exclusive licensees of Jamba Juice in Hawaii, opening their first store in June 1999. Less than one year later, the group secured the rights for Jamba Juice for the state of Florida. The move into Florida lead to the group’s expansion of Starbucks Coffee in Puerto Rico in 2002. Prior to establishing Coffee Partners Hawaii, He served as the Vice President of Operations for Pacific Video Entertainment Corp., the Blockbuster Video franchisee in Hawaii and Guam. Before joining Pacific Video Entertainment Corp. in June 1989, where he worked with the Snowmass Lodge and Club as a manager of their hotel. Now Scott has switched to fitness and now owns Orangetheory Fitness in Kapolei.
Who is Adrienne Meelarp?
Adrienne Meelarp is the Lead Trainer, OrangeTheory Fitness Kapolei. Before transitioning to fitness she was a United States Marine Corps Officer for eleven years. With her military experience Adrienne has developed vast skills and has become a true results-driven professional with skills in Marketing, promotional campaigns, negotiating and purchasing, government liaison, and driving cooperative relationships with staffs. A true team player, Adrienne has also worked as an Independent Team Beachbody Coach.

Attilio: Well, hey, everybody. This is Attilio. I was at Orangetheory this morning getting a kick ass workout. This lady came up to me. She tapped me on the shoulder and started asking a bunch of tax and legal questions. I’m like, “Excuse me, I’m on a treadmill here.” And I said, “You should seek the appropriate licensed professional. So if you hear anything on the show that sounds like legal advice, go see an attorney. If it sounds like tax advice, go check it out with a CPA. Because today, what are we going to talk about?

Adrienne: We’re going to talk about real estate.

Attilio: Yeah.

Adrienne: And you’re going to be edutained.

Attilio: Edutained. What does that—no, it’s—yeah, edutained.

Adrienne: It is edutained. Edutainedness.

Attilio: That’s a combo word.

Adrienne: That’s right. So you’re going to be educated.

Attilio: What two words are you combining?

Adrienne: Educated and entertained.

Attilio: So speaking of edutaining….

Adrienne: Yes. I have some quotes to start our show with courtesy of Hawaii Pacific Property Management.

Adrienne: Alright. So this first one is from Hellen Keller. “True happiness is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.” This next one is another one about happiness. Are you ready?

Attilio: Yes.

Adrienne: From Albert Schweitzer. “Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory.”

Attilio: What? Say that again.

Adrienne: “Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory.”

Attilio: Good health and a bad memory. What does that mean?

Adrienne: So that means you’re healthy, but, you know, you just—

Attilio: You forget when you grab the Twinkies that it’s probably not a good idea?

Adrienne: No, it’s just like you forge the bad things.

Attilio: Okay.

Adrienne: Like you don’t hold on to them.

Attilio: Yes.

Adrienne: So those are my two quotes. The other one that Duke sent was “Step 1-4” which I don’t know that that’s really a quote. But I can share the four step process here. “Ask yourself what you want. Step one. Step two, clearly answer it. Step three, focus on your new target and go after it. And then the last step is don’t change your mind when things get tough.”

Attilio: “Who keeps moving my stuff?” That’s a quote from Hellen Keller. Anyway.

Adrienne: You’re just wrong.

Attilio: What’s that?

Adrienne: I said, “You’re wrong.” That’s just wrong.

Attilio: Well, if you couldn’t see, wouldn’t you be pissed off if people kept moving your stuff?

Adrienne: Yes. 

Attilio: I would be.

Adrienne: I would be. Yeah.

Attilio: You’d be like running into walls and stuff like that. “Who put this coffee table over here? I just hit my shins.” That’s a quote for Hellen Keller.

Adrienne: Okay. So moving on. Let’s give a Property Management tip of the week.

Attilio: Is Duke calling?

Adrienne: He’s not. We’re just going to have to do one for him.

Attilio: We know Duke so well that we’ll do a property management tip of the week.

Adrienne: Well, I’ll give like a—

Attilio: Do you have one?

Adrienne: Yeah. I have a personal story here.

Attilio: This is live radio. We don’t need to be sharing personal stuff.

Adrienne: It’s a personal story about Hawaii Pacific Property Management.

Attilio: Oh, it’s a personal story you can share.

Adrienne: Exactly.

Attilio: Okay.

Adrienne: So I have a tenant over in Mililani and I guess the washer/dryer had gone out, so—

Attilio: What? For like dinner or something? On a date?

Adrienne: No, it just went out. Like it doesn’t work.

Attilio: Oh, it broke. Okay.

Adrienne: It needed to be replaced. So, Melissa over there at Hawaii Pacific Property Management was very helpful. And she just—

Attilio: What? Did she do laundry or something?

Adrienne: No. She—

Attilio: Did she iron?

Adrienne: Yeah. She coordinated it all. Like the old one gone, new one in. Tenants are happy.

Attilio: Tenants are happy.

Adrienne: And I didn’t have to deal with it.

Attilio: You know, I heard they have an eviction guarantee, and I heard they have a rent guarantee. What’s that all about?

Adrienne: So the eviction guarantee basically is if Hawaii Pacific Property Management chooses a tenant, and they have a very thorough investigation on all tenants–

Attilio: Investigation? What are thy hiring? Magnum PI?

Adrienne: Pretty much.

Attilio: Yeah. You show up in a Ferrari? Alright.

Adrienne: So they’re going to look into all these tenants. So if they approve the tenant, and that tenant stops paying rent or needs to be evicted, then they’re going to take care of it.

Attilio: You know, I want to share with our listeners here, business owners, parents, anybody looking to establish a relationship with any other humanoid on the planet, and you’re in some kind of formal or informal interview process, our very last question that we ask is what, Adrienne?

Adrienne: Oh, we’re giving away our secrets.

Attilio: That’s okay.

Adrienne: Okay.

Attilio: You know, here’s what we know about human nature. Everybody knows what they need to do, but they just don’t do it. So it doesn’t matter if we share it because most people just won’t execute.

Adrienne: Alright. Well, here’s our last and final question. We do a very thorough background investigation.

Attilio: The CIA would be impressed with how deep we go.

Adrienne: Yes. Is there anything that we might find that you’d like to share with us now before it’s too late? If we find out about it, it’s, you know, game over.

Attilio: You know, we’ve had people say, “Well, my parole officer says I should do more job interviews.” We’ve had people say—they ask us a question. “Does your firm press charges?” No, no. Come on.

Adrienne: That did not happen.

Attilio: But, anyway, we—

Adrienne: Little things have come up.

Attilio: Yeah. We’ve learned about little things. The second question at the end, too, we always ask is, “Are you going on any vacations in the next 365 days?” Because you get all excited about a candidate. “Alright. We’re going to start our training program.” And they come in on Monday. “By the way, next week, Friday, I’m leaving for a family reunion for three weeks.” So we ask the question upfront. Not that we don’t want you to go on your family reunion, we just need to know, and maybe we’ll—

Adrienne: So start planning.

Attilio: Start planning. Yeah. What was the second thing? The rent guarantee?

Adrienne: Oh, well, I wanted to talk about our Career Night. Because you were talking about hiring, and I just wanted to give an update. We had an awesome career night. We had so many people that showed up and had great questions and great energy.

Attilio: Yeah. We had, I think, what? 16 or 18 people show up for career night?

Adrienne: yeah. And there were like 25 that RSVPed. So there’s some people that flaked or had life that came up, but it was a pretty good turnout.

Adrienne: Okay. So basically this is how it works. If they can’t get your home rented within that first 30 days, they’ll pay the rent.

Attilio: They’ll pay the rent.

Adrienne: They’ll pay the rent.

Attilio: That is just crazy.

Adrienne: It is.

Attilio: Alright, folks. You guys are in for a special treat or trick. I’m not sure which it is because we’ve got Halloween coming up. You guys should be scared right now because we’ve got two Adriennes in the studio. Uh-oh. So I’m going to talk about the other Adrienne. You talk about the other Scott.  We’ve only got one Scott in the studio.

Adrienne: There’s only one Scott. 

Attilio: Okay. There can only be one. Go ahead. Talk about Scott.

Adrienne: Okay. So we have Scott. He’s the owner of Orangetheory Fitness. His background is Vice President of Operations for Starbucks Coffee Hawaii. Then basically he moved into the Jamba Juice opening the first store in 1999. Less than a year later, his group secured the rights of Jamba Juice for the state of Florida. So the move into Florida led to the group’s expansion of Starbucks Coffee to Puerto Rico, then into establishing the coffee partners for Hawaii. So, Scott, welcome to the show. Moving from Starbucks/Jamba Juice into fitness. 

Attilio: Alright. And we also have another welcome, and that’s for Adrienne. And you guys spell your names the same way, right?

Adrienne OTF (Orangetheory): Yep.

Attilio: Adrienne. You know what? This is an impressive resume just by saying this one thing. She was an officer in the Marine Corps.

Adrienne OTF: Yes, sir. Yes, I was.

Attilio: And if you go to Orangetheory, she’s going to be one of your coaches during one of the workout sessions. I don’t know if that’s a scary thing—no. It’s motivational.

Adrienne OTF: Yes, it is. Very motivational.

Attilio: Because what she’ll do if you don’t finish the workout; she’ll start shooting bullets over your head and lobbing hand grenades at you. No.

Adrienne OTF: No. I wouldn’t go that far.

Attilio: Alright. So whenever we have guests on this show, a couple of things that we do—kind of like local style. A lot of times people want to get to know who you are as a person, then we start talking business. So we’ll throw this one out to Scott. Scott, how did you end up in Hawaii, or where are you form originally?

Scott: Originally I grew up in Michigan. Actually, I moved here about 27 years ago in business with my older brother, and that’s what got me here originally.  

Attilio: Oh, wow. And then, Adrienne, what brought you to Hawaii?

Adrienne OTF: The Marine Corps.

Attilio: The Marine Corps. They said, “You’re going here.”

Adrienne OTF: They told my husband he’s coming here, so we came.

Adrienne: Oh. So you weren’t stationed at Kaneohe Bay. It was your husband.

Adrienne OTF: No, my husband’s at Camp Smith.

Adrienne: Oh, Camp Smith.

Adrienne OTF: Yes.

Adrienne: Okay. So you guys were dual military?

Adrienne OTF: We were dual military, then we started to add to our clan, and so—

Attilio: Got kids.

Adrienne OTF: We became one military and one spouse.

Adrienne: Good planning.

Attilio: Alright. So let’s talk about Orangetheory. Scott, you are what we call a serial entrepreneur. What made you decide to get into this Orangetheory—you know what? Tell the folks – what is Orangetheory?

Scott: Sure.

Attilio: Go ahead.

Scott: Orangetheory is a one-hour group fitness circuit train. During that hour, you do half cardio, half strength training, and you have a coach that leads you through the workout the entire hour.

Attilio: And one of those coaches is Adrienne.

Adrienne OTF: Yes, sir.

Attilio: Alright. Go ahead, Adrienne.

Adrienne: So, Adrienne—

Attilio: Adrienne!

Adrienne: How did you make the move from the Marine Corps into fitness?

Adrienne OTF: It was my husband’s idea. So I went with it.

Adrienne: Okay. So it was his idea to get you into the fitness industry. How did you find Orangetheory?

Adrienne OTF: We opened up a—when I was living in California, they opened up, and it was my type of workout. One hour, full body circuit. It was just like I was coming out of the Marine Corp, walking back into another family. 

Attilio: So it’s probably like boot camp and a night club because it’s kind of a night clubby kind of atmosphere when you’re working out. You’ve got the music.

Adrienne OTF: Exactly. You get that high-pumping music that gives you that energy, and you’ve got that coach driving that course, getting you push yourself past the obstacles that are standing in your way.

Attilio: I tell you folks—okay, Adrienne and I have, the Team Lally Adrienne, have the personal experience with working out. I’ve actually been going like Monday through Friday, and then sneaking on Saturday and Sunday, and then running some 20Ks in between. But anyway, you know what I love about it, Tony Robins talks about it. We have six human needs that create all our—that affects our motivation, our behavior, and the six human needs, the first two are what, Adrienne?

Adrienne: Certainty and variety.

Attilio: So the certainty we like about Orangetheory is that when we show up, the class is going to start on time, and it’s going to finish on time. And the variety is what, Adrienne?

Adrienne: That the workout is like top secret. Like you don’t even know what it is until you start doing it.

Adrienne OTF: It’s different every day, and you’ll never know the workout until the coach comes and tells you what it is that day. 

Attilio: Yeah. So this morning’s workout was called “We’re going to whip you till you cry” was the theme. No, no. That wasn’t the theme. So what are the different themes? You guys have these things like—

Adrienne OTF: Endurance.

Attilio: Endurance.

Adrienne OTF: Strength. Power. A mixture of those three, as well. It’s based off those types of exercises to get people to push past their limits.

Attilio: Now, what about—do you guys take suggestions for names? What about ‘Cry like a little girl’? Would that be a good theme for a workout?


Adrienne OTF: You know, maybe we could put that in somewhere. Just for you.

Scott: Come on. It’s not that bad, guys.

Adrienne: Now, how many different workouts do you guys have?

Attilio: Is it 365?

Adrienne OTF: The workout is different every day of the month, every day of the year. We never repeat a workout. 

Attilio: Now is it true that if we’re doing the workout at any studio around the world it’s all the same workout?

Adrienne OTF: Yes. We are still in the launch phase at OTF Kapolei, but come October 16th, we will be on schedule with every other Orangetheory in the United States and outside.

Attilio: And you know what’s cool? When you’re in there working out, you don’t really care what they’re doing in Waikiki or wherever else Orangetheory is. All you focus on is that treadmill right underneath your feet or that weight in your hand. I love working out. You know, here’s one of the things I’ll tell you folks out there. If you’re one of these people that’s at the Olympic level, this workout works for you. If you’re a mom that just wants to fit back into her wedding dress or her prom dress, this workout is for you. And you can be side-by-side with these two completely opposite end of the spectrum people and get your own workout. This is how I describe it: group workout with individualized results.

Adrienne OTF: Exactly. 

Attilio: Adrienne, what other questions do you have for Scott?

Adrienne: Okay. So, Scott, coming from like the food industry with Starbucks and Jamba Juice, what made you make this switch from food to fitness?

Scott: Well, the first thing with Orangetheory and this concept is in my personal life, I’m very active, and went to San Diego to try a number of classes, and was very impressed. Loved the workout, and as Attilio said, it’s for everybody. And that’s when I really just thought, “Hey, this thing’s going to be great.” And then well-run company, great business model. Those things really attracted me.

Attilio: I tell you, you got – so we know this from the SVA – something like 90% percent of small businesses that are not franchised are out of business within the first five years, but less than 10% of franchised business are out of business within five years. Why is that, Adrienne?

Adrienne: Because they don’t have systems and models and a plan. Like a proven—

Attilio: They’re Mom and Pop’s, but a franchise does have a plan, and it’s obvious that you guys are dialing in because you guys have an app on your phone. You can register for classes.

Adrienne: You do an excellent job with your social media push.

Adrienne OTF: Yes.

Attilio: And Adrienne, what’s that thing we’ve got to wear around our chests? What’s that all about?

Adrienne OTF: It’s called a heart rate monitor.

Attilio: And what’s the purpose of it?

Adrienne OTF: And it’s tracking your heart rate throughout the entire workout. The goal for Orangetheory Fitness is to take you – it’s interval training on the treadmills – so it’s to take you and raise your heart rate a little bit, but then bring it back down. So it’s to push yourself throughout the workout. Even though you think you can’t, you can. 

Attilio: Yeah.

Adrienne OTF: To push yourself a little bit and bring it back down. So you can see your results. You see how many calories you burned. How your average heartbeat was throughout the workout, and you see how many minutes you spent in all of our zones.

Attilio: Yeah, I kind of describe it as biofeedback. You get to see—you know, I like going into the throw up zone.


Adrienne OTF: No.

Attilio: That’s zone number seven.

Adrienne OTF: We don’t have that zone. It’s only—we don’t have that one.

Adrienne: That kind of is like the red zone. If you spend too much time at that peak heart rate, you feel like you’re going to get nauseous at end.

Adrienne OTF: The red zone is okay as long as you are comfortable there. The moment you start to feel uncomfortable there is the moment we need to dial you back.

Attilio: Yeah. Because there’s your heart rate, but what the monitor is not monitoring is maybe like your oxygen intake. So you may feel comfortable at that level. Like I have an extremely low heart rate. If I’m running in more than the orange than the red, I’m going to have a coronary because I’m going like 11 miles per hour on the treadmill, and I won’t get up to red. But that’s okay. I’m dripping sweat every time I leave that thing.

Adrienne OTF: Right. Some people won’t—just like you just said. It depends on your resting heart rate. Some peoples are just naturally lower some are just naturally higher. Those naturally higher are going to get there quicker, but they could still feel okay even if they’re in the red. Those that are lower may only get to orange for a short amount of time, but that’s okay because the hour workout is going to give you exactly what you want. A full body workout. Half cardio half weight room floor, and you are going to see results.

Adrienne: So, Scott, we have the location here in Kapolei, and then there’s one in Waikiki.

Scott: Correct.

Adrienne: Is there any other plans for—

Attilio: What’s on the horizon?

Scott: What’s on the horizon? They’ve got a site at the Salt Project in Kaka’ako that a lot of people has seen has been promoted and then they had some challenges with the structure, but they’re going to try to get that under way sometime early next year. Also another location coming up at the Panem Building in the ground floor, and that’ll probably be late this year or early 2017. 

Attilio: You know, I like the accountability aspect of it because we—actually, if you’re an employer out there, we just – they call these blue zones – and it’s a theory that it was a TED Talk on it where they went into certain communities and found out that people had lived for long periods of time and had extremely goo mental well-being and health, and what they found is that exercise or physical fitness is a key component to your mental well-being. So anyway—

Adrienne: Well, like that, and then your diet, and then your personal relationships.

Attilio: You know, for me, personally, it’s a lot of exercise followed by shots of tequila.


Adrienne: No.

Attilio: No.

Adrienne: No, you’ve actually started to eat a little healthier. I noticed. Instead of donuts, you’re bringing in bananas or oranges.

Attilio: I know I am a sugar addict. I will eat like a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts all by myself in one sitting. Now I’m like I see the calorie counts and the pain that comes with it, and now I’m like the anti-Pavlov dog. I’m like, “Oh, I’m going to have to work out hard for this one, so I’m going to not have these 11 other donuts, I’m going to have just this 1.”

Adrienne: So, Scott, for these other locations, how do you guys find your trainers and your staff for each location?

Scott: Sure. Well, it’s kind of the traditional way for recruiting, you know, through Craigslist, a lot of word of mouth, and we’ve gone back to other businesses we own and contacted people to work with us.

Attilio: You know, this is me because I talk a lot is that I was making a point and then I didn’t make it. SO I’m circling back around to the blue zones. So wellness programs. They’re actually taking that program and looking at different cities. Kapolei right now.

Scott: Kapolei is one of them. Yeah.

Attilio: Yeah. For a blue zone.

Scott: Kimberly Pine, yes.

Attilio: With Kimberly Pine and Scott’s and a really good friend of mine is a director, and we went to the meeting. The community meeting for that, and one of the components of it is having a wellness program in the workplace. So this is how we are incorporating Orangetheory into our wellness program. How are we doing that, Adrienne?

Adrienne: So basically our team members, if they work out a minimum of three times a week—

Attilio: Three times a week.

Adrienne: That would equal 12 workouts in a month, we’ll pay for half of their membership.

Attilio: Reimburse them.

Adrienne OTF: Awesome.

Attilio: Why, as an employer, do you want to do something like this? I’ll tell you why. It has built in accountability because Adrienne – instructor Adrienne – what do we get in our email inbox after every workout?

Adrienne OTF: You get a summary of your workout. And the key thing is to keep that summary and hold yourself accountable and see how you do and how you progress as you keep coming to Orangetheory.

Attilio: So we don’t have to wonder if our staff worked out.

Adrienne OTF: Nope:

Attilio: They just send us the emails.

Adrienne OTF: Yep. And then you have accountability.

Attilio: But Scott wanted to say something?

Scott: I wanted to let everyone know that both Adrienne and Attilio are great examples of living a healthy lifestyle. They both are very fit and workout, but they encourage their team. We’ve had a number of people from their team come in and join up and start to do the workouts and get fit, but these guys really promote within their company that wellness and being an employer of choice. So good on you guys. Impressive. And you guys are good role models and behaviors. Well done.

Attilio: Because you look at it. You know, if you make a whole bunch of money, and you’re all super successful, and you don’t have good health, what they heck are we doing it for? You know, we always tell realtors if you’re showing a home and it’s got a second story, and you’re out of breath showing them the second floor, you need to start working out. So, anyway. Well, what other questions do we have for them? Alright—

Adrienne: Oh, I know that you guys have like a lot of events, well, I’ve noticed events.

Attilio: Oh, yeah. What’s coming up?

Adrienne: Yeah, tell us about some upcoming events about Orangetheory.

Adrienne OTF: Okay, so on the 29th of October, we’re having a Halloween themed workout. We have 3 workouts that Saturday starting at 7 am to 8 am and then 15 minute increments then we have more workouts, and we’re going to have a live DJ there. Everybody can wear Halloween colors, Halloween-type costumes that they can work out in, so make sure that you can sweat in it because that’s what you’re going to get. And all the coaches are going to be on deck, and we’re going to have a good time. Just helping people get healthy and get fit.

Attilio: Alright.

Adrienne: So that’s Saturday, October 29th?

Adrienne OTF: October 29th

Adrienne: Starting at 7 am?

Adrienne OTF: Starting at 7 am. And then the 24th though the 31st of October is known as our Hell Week. 

Attilio: Hell Week.

Adrienne OTF: Hell Week.

Scott: That’s perfect for you guys.

Attilio: Satan will actually be teaching all classes.

Adrienne OTF: (laughter) And that week is just Orangetheory likes to do a lot of different themed workouts throughout the year, and all the Orangetheories do them. And it’s just a way to build comradery within OTF community. And it’s just going to add a little flavor to the workouts.

Attilio: You know, we’re on the west side, and I see a lot of people with tattoos 96792. I’m thinking I might get a 615 tattoo.

Adrienne OTF: For your OTF? The have OTF right under it.

Attilio: OTF 615.

Adrienne OTF: There it is.

Attilio: Because I’m with the 615 Crew.

Adrienne OTF: There you go.

Attilio: You know, I get good laughs form everybody because at the end of the class, I always say as we’re all walking away, “Alright. I’ll see you tomorrow.” And everybody laughs.

Adrienne OTF: And you see the same crew, right?

Scott: People are held accountable by the other people that go to class. “Hey, where were you last week? You weren’t here.” Whoa, hey, somebody’s watching.

Adrienne: Yeah, the group accountability is great. So if there’s somebody out there listening that‘s not currently a member, they just want to test it out, how does that work?

Scott: Sure. Call us up, go on the website orangetheoryfitness.com/Kapolei. You can come down and have a free introductory session. Just schedule it and come early, and we’ll get you all set up and give you a tour, and get you set up with a heart rate monitor, and give us a try.

Adrienne OTF: All of the coaches at Orangetheory Fitness, we’re all certified personal trainers. So it’s like you have your own personal trainer for that one hour. When you come in 15 minutes prior to the class, that coach will take that new intro through the entire thing so that they feel comfortable with the row machine, with the treadmill, and what’s about to happen on the weight room floor.

Attilio: Yeah.

Adrienne OTF: So we make sure that every intro has our undivided attention throughout to get them used to how the workout goes.

Attilio: And because you have half the class doing something and the other half doing something else. I like the fact, too, that you guys have that second coach because you have that one coach, I mean, they’re juggling like—how many people are there in a class?

Adrienne OTF: 24.

Attilio: 24. So you’ve got 12 doing something and 12 doing something else, and then you have that backup coach that’s coming there and helping people with form and posture, and somebody made up a question “but the main instructor just keeps the flow and the energy going?”

Adrienne OTF: Yes, and the floor coach is used to help with, like you just said the posture and the form, to help people really engage the appropriate muscles when they’re working out.

If you don’t know anything about it, you should go on the internet right now and start checking it out. Listen, folks, you want to make a change? Here’s a—I’ll give you a Zig Zigler quote. “We oftentimes”—“everybody wants to change the direction of their life, but they are unwilling to change themselves” So if you want to make a change in yourself, in your mental well-being, physical well-being, you’ve got to commit to something. So Orangetheory is the way. Orange theory is the way. It sounds like cult. Are you guys a cult?

Adrienne OTF: No.

Scott: Kind of.

Attilio: I would say—cults. Here’s a good thing about cults. If it’s a good cult. I don’t know, I don’t do any cult comparisons. If it’s a good cult, the good thing about a cult is when you ask somebody to do something, they just do it. If it’s a good cult, but unfortunately most cults are not good. And so Orangetheory isn’t one, but we wish that when you went in—you know what’s cool? For 60 minutes, you’re in a cult because you do what the instructor tells you to do and, like Scott said, at your own pace.

Adrienne OTF: It’s a way of life. And, yes, it can become a group way of life. And if you refer to that as a cult, then yes, it’s a good cult. And it’s the OTF way of doing cults.

Attilio: You know, when you said that, when we were doing the workouts in the park, I thought you were saying like WTF. I’m like, “What’s a WTF workout? Is that like a really difficult”— But you’re saying OTF.

Adrienne OTF: I’m saying OTF. But you probably thought OTF when you were done.

Attilio: Yeah.

Scott: But that’s probably one of the biggest appeals are to us. People can walk in and not think about “What am I going to do today? What am I going to do today?” Let the coach guide you. You know, kind of turn your mind off, focus on the suffering—no, I mean, focus on the workout. But really, let them guide you so you don’t have to think about it. That’s where people, I think, have a lot of challenges. Going to a lot of gyms is “What am I going to do today?” And what’s most effective.

Adrienne: Now, like what if someone has some limitations or injuries and they can’t do that move?

Adrienne OTF: Okay. Again, this is why we’re all certified personal trainers on the floor is that we can give them exercise options even for those people who can’t get on a treadmill. We have a strider or a bike that we can adjust for them that they can do in that cardio portion. And then on the weight room floor, we have a variety of things. We’d just have to reach back into our personal training piggyback and pull it out. And we have a variety of ways to help people who have those exercise restrictions and give them a way to do the exercise so they can get the most out of the workout. 

Attilio: Yeah, I see every time the coaches give modifications—

Adrienne OTF: We call them options.

Attilio: Or options. Sorry. It was that other people that used that word.

Adrienne OTF: Other people. Not Orangetheory.

Attilio: But you guys change the work out to adjust it.

Adrienne OTF: Yes, to adjust the needs of that individual. Yes, we do.

Scott: Yes. That’s one of the biggest things we continue to communicate with our members is go your own pace.

Adrienne: So you guys have this contest going one with—what is it? $2500 that you could win? Tell us about that.

Scott: Yeah. The weight loss challenge. It’s a six-week kind of a contest. It’s really for fun, and people challenge themselves again where the person who loses the largest percent of weight based on when they start wins the $2500, but it’s really just something to challenge yourself and have fun with and the coaches will get involved with you and help you, you know, and guide you through it, but it’s really just something to have a good time with.

Attilio: I think it’s all, too, I see the camaraderie that when people know that you’re in that, you’re fellow workoutees – I’m going to make up that word – will encourage you, too. And when you win, they’re going to walk up to you and say, “What a loser!”


Attilio: That’s the one time when you’re proud to be called a loser, right? Losing weight?

Adrienne OTF: Exactly. And you’ll get to see your results, and I tell you, the changes that I have seen with the weight loss challenge are phenomenal.

Adrienne: So like with this weight loss challenge, do you guys also give them tips on how to eat better or eat cleaner? Not just the workout tips.

Scott: Yeah, we do. We definitely make some suggestions, but a lot of people is just getting people in. If you’re in the weight loss challenge, you have to come in three times a week much like you guys are promoting with your team, but that’s the main thing. Be consistent. Like anything, you know, building good habits is consistency, so we just want them in and get them a great workout.

Attilio: Well, we’ve talked about it on previous shows, it’s a website we like to promote, and they have this new fad diet that’s sweeping across the nation. Scott: You know, the last thing I want to – and you guys can attest this because you’re in there doing the workouts and we appreciate your support is – it’s challenging, but it’s fun.

Adrienne OTF: I would echo that. It is a great – I have taught many group exercise workouts in many different formats. This is the one where you’ll see the most results. You’ll have the most fun. You’ll understand what you’re working on because the trainer will coach you to it and coach you through it, so you’ll get a better understanding of working out. You’ll get a full body workout, and you’ll feel awesome. You might feel sore for a little bit, but you’ll feel awesome at the same time.

Attilio: I was speaking to my fellow germaphobes out there. They’re constantly having us wipe everything down. So I like working out there. But that’s my little big pet peeve. I don’t want the big, sweaty man-gym. As a germaphobe, because we’re like sweating gallons in there.

Adrienne OTF: Oh, yes, you are.

Attilio: This would take care of the water shortage if they could collect all our sweat.

Adrienne: That’s disgusting.

Adrienne OTF: It would help out California, though.

Attilio: Send Orangetheory sweat to them. Anyway.

Adrienne: What training events are you referencing?

Attilio: Just training events in general. Anybody who’s doing anything in life, you’re going to training events, and you’ve got to ask yourself—

Adrienne: What about like when you’re at Orangetheory?

Attilio: At Orangetheory? No. It’s only all in up there at Orangetheory. You’ve got no slackers going to Orangetheory, that’s for sure.

Adrienne: Okay. Just making sure.

Attilio: So you’re one of these three people, and we have names for them, the first one is a prisoner. Adrienne, what’s a prisoner?

Adrienne: Oh, they don’t engage, they spend class time catching up on emails. Yeah, I kind of felt lie that at my core classes.

Attilio: Yeah.

Adrienne: It was just a lot of (laughter).

Attilio: Anyway, they escape by spending time in the hall, on their phone, holds on to limiting beliefs, multitasks their computer by working on side projects, pushes back on trainer or other participants if they don’t agree. This is the prisoner mentality when we go to training. The next one is called the vacationer. What’s the vacationer?

Adrienne: Well, they spend as much time talking as they do listening.

Attilio: Yeah. What’s the description, though?

Adrienne: Oh. It’s a day—

Attilio: The grey part.

Adrienne: Oh, excuse me.

Attilio: Pay attention. Stop being a prisoner.

Adrienne: Sorry. I’m not focused. A day in training is better than a day on the job.

Attilio: Yeah.

Adrienne: That’s what you wanted?

Attilio: That’s the vacationer’s attitude towards training.

Adrienne: Oh, okay.

Attilio: And read all this stuff. Quickly.

Adrienne: Again? Oh, okay. They return late form a break and lunch. They’re not purposeful in their learning goals. OMG. Spends the day on their smartphone texting and checking Facebook.

Attilio: Yeah. Alright, so this is the person you want to do or be when you to training. We call them the explorer. They’re excited and curious about new knowledge, skills, and tools they will discover in the class. They listen attentively then participate fully in discussions and exercises. They ask meaningful questions. They tell—they recite dirty limericks. No, no, no. Not that part—

Adrienne: Dirty limericks? You’re making stuff up now.

Attilio: They adopt a posture of acceptance. Take notes in their manual for future reference and respects the different learning styles. Let’s talk about notes. There’s a quote form Daymond John. We got to meet him.

Adrienne: Yes.

Attilio: Who’s Daymond John?

Adrienne: He is the founder/owner of FUBU.

So if you don’t have a photographic memory, take notes. Also it creates kinesthetic learning because you’re writing stuff down and then you can reference it later.

Adrienne: Well, I want to go back to this explorer mode of learning.

Attilio: Yes.

Adrienne: And just, you know, getting back to if you’re not in that—

Attilio: State of learning.

Adrienne: The state of learning then what state are you in if you’re not learning?

Attilio: Well, again, Tony Robins talks about the six human needs and one of them is growth. And everybody listening to this will automatically be able to fill in the blank. If you’re not growing, you’re….?
